Blackwood River Canoeing

October School Holidays

This is a relaxing weekend on and by the river at a “rustic private camp” similar to Barrabup and located on the banks of the Blackwood.  There is a giant wooden shelter in the camp that contains large tables for playing games and keeping out of the rain – enough to fit everybody.  There is no power except for a small solar powered light.  We generally camp over 3 or 4 nights and do some canoeing over 1 or 2 days.  Canoeing start with a 30 minute instruction session at the start of each day then we paddle about 8 ~ 15 km depending on abilities, weather and enthusiasm!  Canadian canoes are hired locally ($25 per canoe a day) and we spend a pleasant half day or so paddling down the Blackwood River. A few small rapids here and there spice things – but we haven’t lost anyone yet!  The Family Bushwalkers Club (as with Barrabup and Torbay) are generally the only ones staying at the camp adding to the security and peace of mind for the parents.
